I love teaching, no matter how hard it can be, there is something existential when you have observed a student ‘learn’ some new concept or do well on an exam. Particularly those students who might not have been `assumed’ to perform well.
I used to work as an Associate Professor in physics teaching students who had just left high school. I noticed that a lot of their big ideas thinking and conceptual understanding was all ingrained during those really important high school years. This has led me to do the Graduate Diploma in Education with the goal of becoming a high school teacher, where I hope to impact on physics and maths big ideas 6 signature pedagogies. Much of my previous teaching used ICT (Blackboard, Moodle, MasteringPhysics) and I hope to apply more ICT skills by applying blended learning, such as that on EDU 628 (Pedagogies for Learning) which I am helping out on producing a video lecture on my Grad. Dip. Ed. Course.
I have always tried to build a rapport with students, and their parents, as for me part of teaching is about getting to know the students. Previously I taught a very international bunch of students (at the university level) with different ideologies and learning styles. As I originally researched in mathematical physics I am possibly uniquely positioned to be able to teach Physics and Maths as my major teaching area: I’m able to teach all of physics and Maths A, B and C level. I also intend to keep performing research in Physics & Maths Education.
